10 Tips to Prepare for Exam Season
Exam season is always a stressful time of year, however, the pressure can be helped by utilising techniques to optimise your studying, and using your time wisely. Whether you’re gearing up for your GCSEs, A-levels, midterms or standardised tests for your university applications, here are some tips to help you prepare effectively.
1. Start early
Preparation and procrastination are natural enemies when it comes to exam revision. Avoid cramming by giving yourself adequate time to revise topics thoroughly and to spot any areas that you need extra work on early. Nobody enjoys cramming!
2. Organise your study space
Keep your study space and your sleeping space separate. Not only will this help you sleep better, but it will help ensure that you are more focused when it comes to revision. Avoid any unnecessary distraction (like your phone or a TV), and keep your study area tidy, as it is much easier to stay focused in a clean environment. Be sure to also keep a good supply of essentials, such as pencils, pens, notebooks and textbooks, nearby in your study space.
3. Set clear goals
Using SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound) goals can help you stay motivated in your revision. Break up big goals, like studying for a test, into small goals, such as a single unit or chapter, to keep your momentum and stop you from getting overwhelmed. As you complete your new goals, be sure to reward yourself! You deserve it.
4. Mix up your study methods
Mixing up your study methods will help keep your mind engaged, as well as boost your ability to retain the information you are studying. There are lots of different ways to study, and you should rotate between different formats (reading, listening, and visualising or writing information) to reinforce your understanding from different angles. Speaking of different study methods, here are a list of different techniques to try:
- Summarising information
- Re-writing notes
- Making flashcards
- Quizzing yourself or, quizzing others with friends
- Speaking out loud
- Retrieval practice
- Make colour coded notes
- Make mind maps
- SQ3R method
- Rewrite past quizzes and tests
5. Take regular breaks
Studying isn’t a marathon, you’re allowed to take breaks! Taking a short break every 25 minutes, or a longer break every hour, will help you avoid burnout, mental fatigue, and keep you engaged with the information you’re studying. There's nothing worse than spending hours revising, only to realise that you haven't actually retained any of the information you've been reading.
6. Stay healthy. There’s more to life than studying!
It’s easy to be swept up into revision, and it isn't uncommon for people’s lives to be temporarily taken over by exam season. However, just because you are revising doesn’t mean it’s the only thing you’re allowed to do. Be sure to prioritise your physical and mental health during this time through exercise, sleeping well, eating and drinking well, and spending time with friends.
7. Use technology wisely
Using educational apps, online resources, tests, and study guides can help streamline your study process. However, don’t solely rely on technology. Rewriting notes and using physical resources are also incredibly useful and help you retain information more effectively.
8. Seek support when needed
Don’t hesitate to reach out for support if you are feeling overwhelmed, or if you don’t fully understand a concept. See if your teachers offer any extra revision, or seek help with one-on-one support through independent tutoring.
9. Practice mindfulness
Exams are a stressful time for everyone, and mindfulness can help alleviate some of the anxiety you might be feeling during this time. Techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or visualisation can all be helpful to reduce any feelings of stress, and to improve focus during study sessions.
10. Try peer support
If you find it hard to study alone, or don’t feel motivated, revising with friends or with a dedicated study group can be a great way to overcome this hurdle. Studying with others also means you can ask each other questions, quiz one another, and share notes.
By using these strategies and techniques, you can support your exam preparation and feel more confident in your ability to succeed. While these tips are helpful, remember that success is in your hands, and the energy you put into studying will likely be reflected in how well you do. However, remember to take time and relax! With proper time and preparation, you will be able to put your best foot forward.
